The Mars Protocol
Mars has been colonized for fifty years, and the relationship between Earth and its red child has never been more strained. When a Martian research station discovers something beneath the polar ice cap — something ancient, something that predates humanity by millions of years — Earth wants it weaponized and Mars wants it shared with the world. Commander Yuki Tanaka finds herself caught between two planets on the brink of war. As the first Martian-born military officer, her loyalties are tested when Earth sends a fleet to seize the discovery by force. With the help of a rogue AI named HERA, a Martian geologist with too many secrets, and a disillusioned Earth diplomat, Yuki must find a way to prevent interplanetary war while protecting a discovery that could change the course of human evolution. The clock is ticking, the fleet is approaching, and the thing beneath the ice is starting to wake up.

✎ Editor's Review
Daniel Kowalski delivers a taut political thriller set against the backdrop of an interplanetary crisis. The Mars-Earth tension feels authentic and well-researched, and the mystery beneath the ice is genuinely intriguing. Yuki is a strong, conflicted protagonist. The pacing occasionally slows for exposition dumps, but the final act is explosive. A solid addition to the Mars sci-fi canon.
