Crown of Thorns
The Thornwood grows where kings have fallen. Each thorn in the great forest is said to contain the soul of a murdered ruler, and the deeper you venture, the louder their whispers become. Wren is a hedge-witch who has lived at the forest's edge her entire life, harvesting thorns for medicine and listening to the kings' secrets. When the current queen falls ill with a curse that can only be cured by the Heart of the Thornwood — a flower that blooms once a century at the forest's center — Wren is conscripted to guide the royal expedition. But the kings in the thorns have their own agenda, and the forest does not give up its secrets willingly. As the expedition ventures deeper, Wren must navigate the competing voices of dead monarchs, each with their own version of the truth, each with their own price for cooperation.

✎ Editor's Review
Crown of Thorns is a dark, atmospheric fairy tale for adults. Theodore Marsh excels at building dread, and the Thornwood is one of the more unsettling fantasy settings in recent memory. Wren is a pragmatic, no-nonsense heroine whose knowledge of the forest makes her invaluable. The novel's pacing occasionally stalls in the middle sections, but the final act delivers satisfying twists. Recommended for fans of dark fairy tales.
